Ryan Shazier: Looking to Be a Great Linebacker

Ryan Shazier was a member of Ohio State’s 2011 recruiting class that signed their Letters of Intent this past February. The class of 24 recruits was one of the best in the country and excelled at the linebacker position with Shazier, Ejuan Price, Curtis Grant and Conner Crowell. Shazier was considered the 14th best outside linebacker nationally by Rivals.com and had offers from most of the best programs in the country including Alabama, Florida, LSU, Oklahoma, and USC.

We asked Shazier recently about his high school career and what set him apart, he answered “My speed.” At 6’3” 205 lbs his was clocked at 4.56 in the 40 yard dash and 4.56 in the shuttle. Playing in the ESPN Under Armour All-Star game this past Winter, Shazier was awarded the “Best Surprise” because of his easy transition from defensive end at Plantation Florida to playing outside linebacker in the game.

But the highlight of his High School career wasn’t the Under Armour game but rather “Having a game winning sack vs Western High School.” he reported to us.

He made two visits before committing to Ohio State in mid-December. “Ohio State and LSU. I loved both of the visits.” He told us about his college recruiting trips.

At Ohio State, Shazier plans to come in early for Spring Practice and earn playing time as a freshman. “I’m looking forward to being a great player under coach Fickell and winning a championship here.” Slotted at the linebacker spot, he will get to play under Luke Fickell while Fickell coaches the position and also while Fickell fills in as the head coach during Jim Tressel’s five game suspension to begin 2011.
