Notre Dame Miami Rivalry

On October 6, 2012, The Hurricanes vs. Fighting Irish are scheduled to continue an age old game of rivalry with Miami. Miami has remained a rival for Notre Dame since the 1950's when Miami gained momentum.

Gerry Faust coached his  last game in 1985, which was an embarrassment to Notre Dame in a 58-7 lose to the Miami Hurricanes. Lou Holtz took Faust's place and brought Notre Dame back around to National Championship and the Miami-Notre Dame rivalry was the hottest of the season.

In the 1980s, beating Notre Dame each time, Miami claimed 3 national championships.  In 1988 Notre Dame defeated Miami and again in 1990. The rivalry between Miami and Notre Dame is a tension that is undeniable and during the height of the tension the coin toss itself was a tough time to wait for both sides.

In 1990, the Irish had a 29-20 victory and pushed Miami out as contenders for the national title.  Notre Dame went to the Orange Bowl that season.

Although Notre Dame maintains its independence, the Fighting Irish still periodically play three favorites of the Big Ten. Miami Hurricanes will once again have a chance to redeem themselves against the Irish and remain on the list of their favorites.

The Fighting Irish's reluctance for regular schedules adds to the sense of spiritual myth and folklore that surrounds the Irish as they come out to challenge one of their favorite rivals. The excitement is already brewing in anticipation of the reunion between the Hurricanes and Irish.
