Kevin Newsome, Early Michigan Recruit Commits to Penn State

6’3”, 215 lbs dual threat quarterback Kevin Newsome committed to Rich Rodriquez back in April. He had planned to run Rodriguez’s unique offense at Michigan but he later de-committed and began to look around. With offers from Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Penn State, and Boston College, Newsome selected the Nittany Lions as his future school just this month.

By Steve Patterson

December Selection

The four star quarterback prospect from Churchland High School in Portsmouth Virginia spent his senior year at Hardgrave Military Academy before returning to his hometown to make his college selection recently. At his prior high school, Newsome told friends and family during a press conference that he had prayed about his decision and had a good felling about attending Penn State.

Playing Time Very Important

The Nittan Lions have only one quarterback ahead of Newsome when 2009 begins, that is starter Daryll Clark. Sophomore Pat Devlin was set to be the next in line but decided to transfer shortly before the bowl season this year opening the door for Newsome. The decision was difficult for Newsome as he grew up a fan of Virginia Tech but couldn’t see himself waiting to play at the next level as he would have to do with the Hokies.

Learning for One Year

Newsome plans to enroll at Penn State in January and learn from Clark for a full year before taking over in 2010. He feels that Clark’s style of play resembles his own and he feels that he can learn much from the senior by sitting behind him in 2009. He has been impressed with the dedication Clark shows during practice including his confidence and poise.

One of the selling points for Penn State beyond early playing time was the campus and game atmosphere that he experienced when he unofficially visited for non-other-than the Michigan match-up. He plans to enroll in the business school and was impressed with the academics on his official visit over the weekend of December 5th.
